Privacy, terms and safety

How we handle your information, the limits of our services, and how to raise a concern.

Who we are and how to contact us

Thriving Epilepsy Awareness (TEA) is responsible for the personal information collected through this website. For privacy questions or to use your data rights, email thrivingepilepsyawareness.ngo@gmail.com (subject “Privacy”), call 0723 319 593, or use the contact form and choose “Privacy or data request”.

  • We collect only what we need for a clear purpose.
  • We ask for your consent before processing location, health-related information (such as medication and appointment schedules), voice input or contact details.
  • We never ask for national ID numbers, full medical histories or diagnoses on this website.
  • We never sell your information.

The AI assistant, voice and location

  • The assistant is automated. No member of staff reads conversations, and they are not saved.
  • Voice input uses your browser’s speech recognition. In some browsers (for example Google Chrome), your audio is sent to the browser company to turn it into text, under that company’s privacy policy. TEA never receives the audio — only the text you review and choose to send.
  • Location is only used if you allow it after we explain why. You can always type a town or area instead.

Reminders by SMS and WhatsApp

  • We treat your schedule as sensitive health information. Your phone number and labels are encrypted in our database.
  • We record your consent, and the time you gave it, before sending any reminder. WhatsApp reminders need a separate consent.
  • To deliver messages we share your phone number and the message text with our SMS provider and, if you choose WhatsApp, with Meta (WhatsApp). They process it under their own terms.
  • Messages are neutral and never include dosing advice. Your label is only included if you choose.
  • Reply STOP, or use the manage page, to stop all messages immediately. You can delete your number and all reminders at any time.

Who we share information with

  • Service providers who help us run the website and send messages (website hosting, SMS provider, WhatsApp/Meta), only for those purposes.
  • Emergency services or authorities only where the law requires it or to protect someone’s life.
  • We do not share or sell your information for marketing.

Your rights

Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019, you can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, object to its use, or withdraw your consent at any time. Contact us using the details above. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).

Ask the TEA assistant

Please don’t send detailed medical history, ID numbers or photos of children by WhatsApp. WhatsApp is run by Meta, and your messages and number will be handled under WhatsApp’s terms as well as TEA’s privacy notice.

WhatsApp is a way to contact the TEA team during working hours. It is not a 24/7 helpline or emergency service. Mon–Fri, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (EAT). We aim to reply within one working day.

Emergency? If a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, or the person is badly hurt or has trouble breathing, call 999 or 112 now.
